Okay I'm pretty thoroughly convinced now...
I'm finding myself reiterating what has been talked about for a long while now - the record companies are on their death beds! Who needs em? Anyone with half a brain, motivation, determination and some people and tech skills can do their own shit now...The only thing a record company can possibly offer now is capital (less and less). BUT if thats all they can do for you then find another source yo! Theres cheaper places/ people to borrow money from if need be...
What surprises me now though is how many people I run into/ know that are still harping on about getting signed! IMO, waste of time even thinking along that route - thats the old way that we've all been pre-conditioned to.
My rant for the day...

I reckon its about building a serious audience/ fan base yourself and then getting your music to em direct!
While I agree to a certain extent, Record companies own the radio, thats why we are force fed Britney and the rest of the Mickey Mouse club, the more real music that goes underground the less we will hear it...unless we happen to be looking for it. And if the only music we really get to hear is on our way to and from work in our car, or music vids on saturday morning we are gonna miss out. We all know music goes in cycles, they'll be another breakout soon where the underground will bubble over like it did in the early nineties, and record companies will have to sign and promote the popular music/bands because of their underground followings, I dont think labels are redundant quite yet....personally I like to own an album over an mp3 something tangible...but maybe thats old fashioned to enjoy the whole package the art work the liner notes etc....though I think what Nine Inch Nails is really advanced with their internet downloads and giving access to remix the tracks yourself...however their fanbase also mostly comes from when they were signed to a major label.
